We are part of a group of people raising funds on behalf of Asociación Mujb’ ab’l yol, which is a grassroots organization that supports Mayan Indigenous community radio movements in Guatemala. The association is located in the highlands of Guatemala and was founded by ex-guerillas from the Internal Armed Conflict (also known as the Mayan Genocide) who operated La Voz Popular, a rebel radio that was founded to disseminate information about the political realities of the country during its operation from 1987-1996.

The first program bringing the voice of the people was transmitted on May 22, 1987 from Volcán Tajumulco. As such, we are commemorating the radio's 39th anniversary to raise funds and continue its legacy in support of "deepening the conscience of struggle in the people."

Currently, the radio is working on digitalizing political literature from the Internal Armed Conflict in order to preserve this historical material both online and in a physical museum space within the association's building. We need funds to support a few particular significant tasks:

Repair of the association's computer to continue the digitization process long-term
Construction work for a physical museum space, including the installation of flooring
Purchase of windows and doors for the museum space
Bathroom installation for museum space

A museum of this sort dedicated to the historical memory of the radio has precedence in the nearby community of Santa Anita la Unión, which operates a museum dedicated to fallen comrades from the Internal Armed Conflict. Additionally, international comrades previously digitalized over 600 programs of La Voz Popular from nearly a decade of transmission of La Voz Popular from Volcán Tajumulco.

Based on estimates we have received from a local community member who would help construct the museum, we estimate we would need $6,000 USD to carry out this project.
