One pivotal moment occurred when a woman in tears approached Andi's workplace seeking support to escape from a dangerous situation. Despite her best efforts, Andi had to turn the woman away due to the limitations of existing government, local agency, and charitable programs. This heartbreaking experience reinforced her belief that there was a need for a different kind of support system—one that caters to those who don't fit the criteria for traditional assistance.

Drawing from her own upbringing and the challenges her mother faced, Andi was driven to create a program that specifically addressed the plight of individuals earning above the poverty line, who were often overlooked by conventional assistance programs. In 2007, she founded Toni's Closet, named after where her mother would place her for protection from danger, with a mission to provide education and resources to working parents and their children who needed to rebuild their lives after experiencing crisis displacement. The organization aimed to bridge the gap between those who earned too much to qualify for government assistance and those who didn't have access to the resources they needed during a crisis.

Andi's personal journey as a survivor of domestic violence and her determination to break the cycle fueled her dedication to creating Toni's Closet. She believed that nobody with earned income should face homelessness, hunger, or other critical issues. Life circumstances, however, can be unpredictable, and the organization sought to offer support when people faced unexpected crises, regardless of their financial status.
