Support Philadelphia Young Playwrights!

At Philadelphia Young Playwrights, we believe that every student has a voice worth hearing.

Since 1987, Philadelphia Young Playwrights (PYP) has celebrated student voices through the art of playwriting by partnering with educators to bring the transformative power of playwriting into classrooms across Greater Philadelphia. Each year, hundreds of students in underserved schools benefit significantly and in fundamental ways that are key to closing achievement gaps. In 2023/24 school year, over 700 individual monologues, individual plays, small group plays, and full class plays were created by our students.

Over the course of the school year, we had the privilege of serving 15 students through one-on-one mentorships. But for the upcoming year, we aspire to extend our reach even further. Our 2 revision retreats this year provided invaluable guidance, community, and support to our young playwrights. Next year, we're determined to host even more of these essential sessions. With our in-school residency program gracing 68 classrooms and reaching 1646 students this year, we're setting our sights on expanding into even MORE classrooms, ensuring that more young minds have the chance to explore the transformative power of storytelling. Our Neighborhood Initiative, hosted at 3 libraries and community spaces, has been a beacon of creativity and inclusion. Next year, we aim to spread this initiative to even MORE neighborhoods, fostering creativity and connection wherever we go.

This year, we've showcased the talent of our young playwrights through workshop productions of 24 plays and monologues. But our aspirations stretch further—we want to produce even MORE work from our students, and with the support of partners including Temple University, Community College of Philadelphia, Rutgers University, Drexel University, and PlayPenn, we're poised to do just that.

As we reflect on the profound impact of storytelling on the lives of our young playwrights, we're driven by an unyielding sense of purpose and determination to achieve even MORE in the coming year. Your support can help us expand our reach, serve more students, and amplify the voices of the next generation. Together, let's create a world where every young person has the opportunity to foster their creative expression, build their confidence, and change their world through the art of playwriting.
