The Pattle to Sx̌ʷnitkʷ (Kettle Falls) Salmon Ceremony is not just an event—it is a sacred gathering rooted in ancestral tradition and cultural responsibility. For centuries, the Sn̓ʕay̓čkstx (Sinixt) and Sx̌ʷy̓ʔiɬp (Swee-ithp) peoples have honored the salmon through this ceremonial practice, holding a profound respect for their role in sustaining life and balancing ecosystems. Today, this ceremony continues to unite Indigenous communities and environmental stewards in the shared mission of protecting and praying for the salmon and their return to the upper Columbia River.

Each year, we undertake a 250-mile transboundary canoe journey spanning the United States and Canada, coming together in prayer and unity. This pilgrimage seeks to honor the salmon’s spirit, advocate for their health, and envision a future where they thrive once again. All tribes are invited to join this timeless endeavor, culminating at one of North America's historical fisheries—Sx̌ʷnitkʷ (Kettle Falls)—to affirm the irreplaceable bond between our people and the salmon.

Historically, thousands of Indigenous peoples converged at Sx̌ʷnitkʷ during salmon runs, with customs such as pausing fishing while early runs passed—a practice symbolizing abundance and respect. The annual Sx̌ʷnitkʷ Salmon Ceremony ensures this legacy endures amidst modern challenges.
