At Symptone, we’re on a mission to make medical education more inclusive and it all started with a personal experience. Our founder, a woman of color, faced a delayed diagnosis simply because there were no medical images showing how her condition looked on darker skin. That experience revealed a serious gap in medical education: students are often trained using only light-skinned images, leaving future doctors unprepared to diagnose conditions on BIPOC patients.

That’s why Symptone exists: to ensure that every doctor is equipped to recognize and treat conditions on all skin tones. And it starts with medical students. Medical school is where diagnostic habits are formed. If students never see how conditions appear on darker skin, misdiagnosis becomes not the exception, but the norm.

Which is why we’re building the Symptone Digital Atlas, an online resource that will showcase how medical conditions present across a diverse range of skin tones. This tool will help medical students, educators, and doctors gain the knowledge they need to provide accurate, timely care to everyone, regardless of skin color.
