Hanzala Project by The Brooklyn Nomads

We're excited to present "Hanzala, still 10 years old since 1948" for the second time on Sunday April 21, 2024.

 

In 1969, Naji al Ali introduced Hanzala to the world. Naji worked actively to bring awareness to humanitarian and social justice issues through the the eyes of the 10 year old child cartoon. Naji was assassinated in London in 1987. His work is still relevant decades later, as children in Gaza today haunt the images he created that still resonate. We wish to honor his struggle for liberation & his talent, while celebrating our cultural heritage through myriad expressions. Here's for more info: https://vimeo.com/933153437?share=copy.

 

On Sat Feb 24, 2024, we presented our pilot event of Hanzala, a new show centered around the iconic cartoon of the Palestinian child that was created by the late Naji al-Ali. The show included live music, cartoon animation, sufi dance, guest artists, and more. The reception was overwhelmingly positive; we were told it was impactful, powerful, and timely. It's safe to say that everyone got something experiencing the Hanzala Performance, whether it was gaining awareness, feeling a part with the community, or healing. 

 

There are many aims for this project, all centered around awareness, community, and healing. And we've been blessed by the support of many, including Naji al-Ali's son, Khaled, who's providing us with cartoons in high resolution.

 

This show nears $15,000 in costs. We are looking to raise $10k from our community.  The funding will cover the rental of the venue and rehearsal space, logistics (commute, printouts), and paying for musicians, animator, and rest of the team.
