More:

The Dream Team Northern Michigan, founded in 2017, is a co-ed baseball league for players with disabilities, ages 8-26. The vision of the Dream Team is to provide a team-oriented, adaptive baseball experience for players at all ability levels so they can have the same childhood and young adult experience on the ballfield as anyone else.

Currently, the dugouts at the two fields at the Grand Traverse County Civic Center where Dream Team games are played are not wheelchair accessible and do not accommodate the needs of players using wheelchairs or other mobility assistive equipment. Due to the nature of our league, there are Dream Team players who use wheelchairs and thus have difficulty entering the dugouts or accessing the ball fields. Beyond being a safety concern, this accessibility challenge also creates an emotional barrier for players who are separated from their team and coaches.

The overall goal for the Field of Dreams project is to construct four permanent dugout structures incorporating universal design concepts. The dugouts selected are factory fabricated and meet the standards of universal design (see visual, attached.) Universal design is a concept under which buildings or spaces are built in a manner that is accessible to all people. Construction will be completed in mid-September 2023.

The refurbished dugouts will create an accessible safe space for players using wheelchairs and other mobility assistive equipment. When completed, players will then be able to enter/exit the dugouts at two separate points and will be able to navigate the dugout space and participate/socialize safely with their teammates. In the event of an emergency or medical incident all players will be able to navigate to safety and/or receive prompt medical attention.

The Dream Team's players, coaches, and families ask you to contribute to this very worthwhile endeavor.  Thank you!
