About Y2SLAY

Y2SLAY is a vibrant, heartfelt original musical about chasing your dreams against all odds—told through the lens of the Asian-American experience during one of the wildest cultural and economic moments of the modern era.

Set in 2007, on the brink of the subprime mortgage crash, the story follows Leo, a first-generation Asian-American teenager whose family is forced to downsize after the recession hits. As his parents fight to rebuild stability, Leo struggles to hold onto his dream of becoming a performer—a dream they fear is unrealistic, unstable, and rooted in a world they don't trust.

Against a backdrop of AIM chats, flip phones, Myspace glitter layouts, and the pop/R&B explosion of the 2000s, Leo forms a secret pop group with his friends, mentored by his teacher Ms. Kay. Their music, fashion, and unapologetic creativity collide with immigrant family expectations, financial insecurity, and the fear of disappointing the people he loves most.

Written by Choreographer and Creative Director Bryan Rone and powered by a hybrid of popular songs and original music from emerging Asian American artists Le Khoa & Khoai Suy Cam, Y2SLAY celebrates community, intergenerational understanding, and the courage it takes to pursue a dream—especially when the world tells you not to.
