Jason stood at the edge of Main Street, hands buried in his coat pockets. A year ago, he had a job, a car, and a small apartment. Then came the layoffs. Then came the eviction. Today, he lives in the shelter three blocks down. Every morning, he passed a sign taped to the café window:

“$100 VISA RAFFLE – $5 a ticket – Help a family off the streets.”

He watched strangers walk by it every day. Some glanced. Most didn’t. A few asked if it was legit. It was. That raffle funded nights in motels for families with babies. It covered bus passes to job interviews. It stocked fresh groceries in the shelter kitchen. One day, someone donated $10. That ticket didn’t win the VISA card. But it helped pay the first week’s rent for Jason’s studio apartment.
