Access to quality childhood education: Tarkwa Breman Girls’ School

Cocoa360 believes every child deserves to be healthy, have a chance to learn, and reach their full potential, regardless of their background circumstances.

The reality is that most farming communities in Ghana, like Tarkwa Breman, lack childhood education necessities. From uniforms and books to transportation fare to school chairs, learning materials are luxuries that many families cannot afford.

Precious Vinyo for example is a 14-year-old student who was forced to walk long distances to school, often in the scorching sun or pouring rain, with nothing to carry her books in or a desk to study from. This makes it difficult for her to concentrate on her studies and puts her health and safety at risk.

Precious isn’t alone.

Cocoa360 founded the Tarkwa Breman Girls’ School (TBGS) in 2015 to reach hundreds of girls like Precious. To date, we’ve reached 330 and counting. Our school uses an innovative model where rural farming families in Ghana work on community-run cocoa farms. In exchange, their children can attend school and access healthcare for free. Our work with these resilient cocoa farmers at Tarkwa Breman has transformed the lives of countless children and has been supported by Google, Yale University, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Cambridge, the Ghana Cocoa Board, the Ministry of Education -Ghana, and more.

Precious’s parents are Cocoa360's community insurance program members who contribute significantly to her education. Every year they pay $455 through their work on the community-run cocoa farm to cover the cost of Precious’ uniform and school materials.

They invite you to bridge the gap so more girls can attend school at no cost, with pride, knowing they have everything they need to succeed. This is a feeling that no child should ever be denied.
