On July 30, 2023, Peter Teahen and John Ockenfels triumphantly returned to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, after completing an ambitious mission that took them around the globe in their single-engine airplane. Setting off from Cedar Rapids on May 5, 2023, they navigated the vast skies in their Cessna, all while raising vital awareness for polio eradication. Not only did they generate funds to support Rotary's End Polio efforts, but they also made a direct impact by administering vaccines to children in need along the way. Take a quick van ride to Douglas Island for a captivating walking tour of the historic Treadwell Mine, led by Rotarian and Juneau Mining Historian Wayne Jensen. Once one of the most productive gold mines in the U.S., it produced an astounding $70 million in gold.

Only a few foundations and the New Office Building remain from the 144 structures that existed in 1910. You'll explore the Treadwell Glory Hole, the entrance to a network of shafts under the Gastineau Channel, and view the pump house with its picturesque waterfall.

Walk approximately 1.5 to 2 miles along the shore to see remnants of old buildings, mining machinery, and the pit where the mine collapsed in 1917. Wear sturdy walking shoes and dress for the weather—this adventure is not to be missed!
