Jamie's thoughts:

Immigration is a central issue in our politics now. In my mind, it shows us where we stand as a compassionate or cruel country. This dance party/fundraiser benefits Oasis Legal Services, a non-profit organization working on behalf of immigrants’ legal rights and representation, working exclusively with LGBTQ clients.

It is nearly impossible to convey how heartbreaking and frightening the situation is for LGBTQ+ immigrants and asylum seekers. The reality makes me depressed and hopeless, so much so that I was moved to do this benefit. I felt I wanted to/had to do something and not just complain to my friends and cry myself to sleep. The truth is that with the atmosphere in our country right now, gathering in joy is resistance in itself. By showing up and contributing, you are directly fueling Oasis Legal Services' life-saving work.
