Welcome to Team Potts Gaming’s fundraising page! At Team Potts Gaming, we are on a mission to empower minority student-athletes to pursue careers in the booming esports industry. By providing affordable high-performance gaming PCs and comprehensive training programs, we are breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for underrepresented groups, ultimately driving greater diversity, inclusivity, and social impact in the gaming world.

Problem:

We are addressing the needs of a historically underserved population and providing them with the skills and resources they need to succeed in the gaming, PC hardware, and Esports industries. Minority teenagers in Charlotte, North Carolina, and across the United States often face challenges when it comes to pursuing careers in the technology industry. Despite being a rapidly growing and lucrative field, the technology industry remains largely dominated by white and male individuals. As a result, minority teenagers may face barriers to entry, such as a lack of access to resources and training, and a lack of representation and role models.

Studies have shown that the gaming industry is not very diverse and that people of color, including African Americans, are underrepresented in both the gaming industry and in esports.

A 2019 study by the International Game Developers Association (IGDA) found that only 4% of game developers identify as African American or Black. This is compared to 80% of game developers who identify as white.
A 2020 study by the National Federation of State High School Associations found that African American students make up only 10% of high school Esports participants, compared to 70% who are white.

Solution:

Team Potts Gaming is a company that addresses the challenges faced by minority teenagers by providing them with the skills and resources they need to succeed in the technology industry. Our solution includes a range of offerings, such as a gaming PC building business, a 12-week training program, Esports events and tournaments, and Esports teams. Through our offerings, we aim to make gaming more accessible to a wider audience, provide education and training on Esports and related fields, enhance digital literacy and technology skills, foster personal and professional growth, and create opportunities for networking and collaboration with peers and industry professionals.

How do we address this problem?

Our 12-week summer program provides access to education and opportunities in these industries, with a focus on gaming PC building, the business of Esports, and Esports training and development. We are committed to creating a positive impact in our community by addressing the underrepresentation of minorities in the gaming, technology, and Esports industries.

We have already secured the space to build our gaming pc’s, host tournaments, and provide training and development. We have also identified 15 minority student-athletes who are eager to learn about gaming and technology. However, we need your help to level the playing field by providing comprehensive Esports training and affordable gaming PC kits that include all necessary components, tools, and instructions to build a high-performance gaming PC for competition.

By donating to our campaign, you can help us empower minority student-athletes to succeed in the competitive world of Esports and prepare them for college or career pathways in gaming, technology, and Esports. Your support will enable us to train minority teens to build gaming PCs, providing them with valuable technical skills and knowledge in computer hardware and assembly. We will also provide them with marketing and sales skills, enabling students to effectively promote and sell the gaming PCs as a source of income. In addition, your donation will help us train students to become Esports professionals, equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge to compete in the fast-growing Esports industry using the gaming PCs they build.

Building a gaming PC using a DIY kit teaches important skills in computer hardware and software, problem-solving, and critical thinking, which are highly valued in the tech industry. By providing access to education and opportunities, we can help students achieve their full potential, leading to greater social mobility and economic success.

With less than 2% of NCAA student-athletes going on to play on a professional level, it is important to encourage minority student-athletes to consider alternative career paths. The gaming and technology industries have been growing rapidly and provide opportunities for skilled workers with diverse backgrounds and experiences. By encouraging minority student athletes to pursue careers in these industries, we can help close the diversity gap and ensure that these industries are more representative of our society.
