I've always felt strongly about helping kids find positive and productive ways to spend their time. And I love swimming in challenging waters like near Alcatraz (I've swum around it twice now, starting and ending in SF). This triathlon is a great way to combine both!
If you scroll further down the page (or look at rocksf.org), you can read all about R.O.C.K. and the wonderful work they are doing to inspire and guide kids through activities - kids who might otherwise not have these opportunities. Their reputation and their score on Charity Navigator are top-notch.
I did my first triathlon at age 52. I stepped up to Olympic distance when I was 62. Ran my first half-marathon last year at 65. Yeah, I'm playing the "old guy" card. I hope I can inspire some of my peers to get off the couch and just get out there and challenge themselves.
Meanwhile, I've done about 12 triathlons but none as famous as the Alcatraz one. It is truly a one-of-a-kind location. Looking up from the swim to see the SF skyline, biking through the Presidio and Golden Gate Park, and suffering through an 8 mile run with amazing views of the Golden Gate. (did I say suffering? strike that). I can't wait to take on this challenge !!
