This is my second year raising money for R.O.C.K in the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon! R.O.C.K. (Real Options for City Kids) is an award-winning charity based in San Francisco. Their mission is to address the whole needs of the child through uplifting sports and fitness programs, outdoor adventures, and nurturing school-based support. The pandemic has affected everyone but school-aged children have experienced serious challenges to their mental health and learning deficits. Many kids have also had limited opportunities for physical activity and their access to enrichment programs have significantly declined. R.O.C.K. has been there filling in these gaps and expanding access to students with the greatest need. Please consider donating to my campaign and helping support this incredibly worthwhile organization.
A few words about the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon (June 5th, 2022):
The last time I did this triathlon, I had one less child and a few less years. This is an inspiring triathlon and my absolute favorite event. You meet competitors from all over the world, people who have been training for years, and others who just want to bask in the beauty of the San Francisco Bay. That said.... it is grueling and fun and crazy, all wrapped in a half-day event.
You start by taking a perfectly well functioning ferry to the shores off of Alcatraz with hundreds of perfect strangers. Then a foghorn blows and you all jump off of the ferry and hopefully swim the 1.5 miles to Crissy Field. Once you make it, you scramble up from the shore, and run to your bike. Once there, you strip out of your wetsuit, hop on your bike and set out for the hilly 18 mile bike ride down the coast and through Golden Gate Park. After finishing that, you kick off your bike shoes, put on your running shoes and begin your 8 mile run. The highlight of the run is the grueling run/crawl up the sand ladder at Baker Beach and back to the finish line.
Wish me luck and please help me reach my goal of $2,000 and cheer me on at the finish line on June 5th!
