Last weekend, students from the law program at Mt. Kenya University in Nairobi were supposed to do something simple: spend one day at a community legal clinic and give legal advice.

Some of the Justice Pamoja students wanted to go further.

Through Justice Pamoja, they have learned from experts about trauma-informed care, violence against women and children, and the difference between giving legal advice and actually walking alongside a client through the justice system.

So they asked us for help.

Justice Pamoja brought several Kenyan lawyers, a magistrate, and a psychologist to the clinic to work alongside and mentor the students—professionals from the same justice system the students themselves hope to enter.

And the students asked us for something else: when the clinic uncovered cases involving violence or abuse that fit Justice Pamoja's mission, would we help take those cases forward?

We said yes.

We are now reviewing the cases that came out of the clinic. Some may involve abuse or neglect of children. Others may involve women seeking support for their children. These cases are not always dramatic, but they can be deeply consequential. Securing child support, for example, can give a woman real choices about her safety and her family's future.

We are raising $3,000 to help Justice Pamoja students and lawyers take the next cases forward. A generous donor will match every gift to this campaign—so we need to raise $1,500 from supporters like you to reach our goal.

Our students expanded the circle by asking experienced professionals to stand with them—and by committing themselves to stand with clients after the clinic was over.
