Without an affordable place to perform, most grassroots theater companies don't survive. TheatreWorks was built to change that.

More than 30 years ago, a small piece of land in Overton Square became something Memphis didn't know it needed: a communal black box theater, run by volunteers and the companies themselves, designed to give homegrown artists an affordable place to create.

Nearly 900 productions later, it's still doing exactly that.

Today, 13 resident and associate companies call Theatreworks home, either at Theatreworks at the Square or Theatreworks at the Evergreen, producing work that tells Memphis stories, amplifies underrepresented voices, and entertains thousands of audience members each year. LGBTQ theatre. Stories by and for women of color. Drag theatre. Experimental work. Tennessee’s only bilingual theatre company. Classic plays. All of it under two roofs, with one collective drive to bring memorable theatre to Memphis!

None of it happens without support from people who believe that art belongs to everyone.
