Story
The Dwelling Place of NY is a privately funded 15 bed transitional residence for women who have recently experienced a violent attack or trauma. We do not accept any funding from the government. We are 100% dependent on grant writing, and donors who have a long history with us. The Dwelling Place has evolved over the years to meet the ever-changing face of homelessness. Yet its mission remains steadfast, to offer safe shelter and individualized care, support, and guidance to women who are in the midst of a crisis brought on by a traumatic event. As they begin to heal, we are able to assist them in moving towards a sustainable, self-supported lifestyle.
Our mission is not simply to take people off the street, but to put them on a successful, sustainable path. We seek to ensure that when people move out that they are ready. They are employed, have learned coping skills, have addressed their trauma, have learned to save and many other things that allow them to be successful and not return to shelter.
Our target group is women who are twenty and above. Women who are accepted into our residence inform our content and activities. For example, if the group residing in our short-term emergency shelter are recent victims of violence, we may assist them and may focus more on understanding violence and dealing with crises.
