Support 1972: Help Us Secure a New Home for Women’s Sports in Austin

Year one of 1972 Women’s Sports Pub has been nothing short of extraordinary—and that’s because of you. Our fans, neighbors, and LGBTQ+ allies built Austin’s first bar dedicated to women’s and gender‑expansive sports. Every cheer, watch party, and moment of connection created a true home for women’s sports.

Why we need your help now

Our current building is being acquired through eminent domain for the Austin Transit Partnership light rail project. We are awaiting an official notice to vacate and are entering a transition period. Relocating a community space like 1972 is a huge challenge—finding the right site, securing a lease, and funding buildout and moving costs are all urgent needs if 1972 is to continue in Austin. Unfortunately, recent changes to SBA eligibility requirements now require businesses to be 100% U.S. citizen-owned. Because 1972 is proudly half immigrant-owned, we are no longer eligible for those funding opportunities, making an already difficult transition even more challenging.

Our goal: raise $50,000 by the end of MONTH to give 1972 the best chance of reopening in a new space and continue the work we began here.

How this campaign will be used (updated priorities). We’ve refined our budget to reflect the immediate priority: securing a new location and getting the community back together quickly.

● $30,000 – lease deposits, site holds, and short-term rent reserves to secure and hold a new space

● $10,000 – targeted marketing and community outreach to relaunch and bring our community back

● $10,000 – emergency operational reserve to cover staffing and basic expenses during the transition

Every dollar contributed helps us lock down a new home where women’s and gender‑expansive athletes and fans can gather, celebrate, and belong.

Why 1972 matters

In just one year, 1972 became more than a pub—it became a movement:

● Strangers became friends.

● Families brought daughters to watch and celebrate female athletes.

● Local girls’ flag football, soccer, and and baseball groups were hosted and honored.

● Local women’s teams and nonprofits held 42 fundraisers, socials, and celebrations.

● A community formed around visibility, equity, and joy.

We are Austin’s first bar of its kind in Texas. We donate 10% of our profits to local nonprofits that expand athletic opportunities for girls and gender‑expansive youth. Losing this space would be a loss for athletes, families, and the broader community that has made 1972 a home.
