Every year, over 640,000 people are released from State and Federal prisons. Across California, those who are released from prison have a roughly 46 percent chance of returning to prison within three years, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Research suggests that individuals with mental illness are at a higher risk of recidivism compared to those without mental health issues. Recidivism among offenders with mental illness refers to the tendency of individuals with mental health issues who have been involved in criminal activities to re-offend after being released from incarceration or completing their sentences. It is a complex issue influenced by various factors such as access to appropriate mental health treatment, social support, and community reintegration programs.
