Our Story

Throughout his time living and studying in the Bay Area, Tone Yao Lee organized and led numerous service projects in his community. Especially when the pandemic began, Tone felt a personal responsibility to help those most in need. Some of these include leading a COVID-relief fundraiser for frontline workers and spearheading a school petition for academic leniency and financial reimbursements after his university transitioned to online classes during the pandemic.

Perhaps the most memorable, Tone independently initiated a project collecting sleeping bags for the homeless. He raised over $3,500 to purchase sleeping bags and care packages for the unhoused in San Jose. Inspired by his efforts, other students set up similar fundraisers for homelessness and mental health research.

What are we doing

In Tone's memory, we have started the Tone Yao Lee Homeless Project to continue Tone’s legacy of aiding the less fortunate and pass on his gift of service. Every quarter (4x a year), we will fundraise and donate sleeping bags, supplies, and non perishable foods to the homeless in the Bay Area.

This is what the Tone Yao Lee Homeless Project is all about - making a tangible difference in our local community.

There are 37,000 homeless in the Bay Area today, representing a 10% increase since the start of the coronavirus. The homeless population here is larger, less sheltered, and growing faster than ever before.

We are asking for recurring donations to help fund our mission every quarter. Every dollar counts!

With a quarterly fundraising goal of $4000, we can provide sleeping bags for over 200 people. Even a small donation of $10 a month can provide shoes every quarter. Here is how your donations can help:

$15 - Care packages (hygiene supplies, tampons, socks, underwear, nonperishable foods, etc.)
$20 - Sleeping bags
$30 - Pair of shoes
$50 - Clothing for an entire family

Unable to donate? We need volunteers too!

We understand if you are unable to make a financial donation! We always need volunteers for our quarterly donations events and a donation of your time is just as impactful. If you would like to volunteer at our next event on December 17th in San Jose, please fill out this form to be notified of how to help! We’ll need help organizing and handing out supplies. Meeting with other volunteers and spending time with the unhoused is truly a humbling and life changing experience!
