This year, the Michigan Resource Generation (RG) chapter is partnering with the Transforming Power Fund to raise $70,000 for TPF’s social justice fund.

What is a social justice fund?

The Transforming Power Fund (TPF) is a Detroit-based social justice fund committed to transformative systems change. Detroit’s innovative Transforming Power Fund is one of the premier social justice funds in the United States that puts community members in charge of funding transformation in their own city. TPF’s bottom-up approach to funding grassroots movements and community organizers prioritizes supporting social justice organizations, creative efforts, and community action led by people of color living in our focus areas of Hamtramck, Highland Park, and Detroit.

The Transforming Power Fund model is anchored by participatory grant-making and donor organizing practices which place decision-making power around grant-making and resource distribution in the hands of the grassroots communities TPF aims to support. TPF hosts a Community Table that determines how the funds are spent, as per community priorities. This interrupts the dynamics of traditional philanthropy by centering community & most impacted folks at the heart of funding decisions.

What kind of organizations does TPF re-grant to?

TPF supports efforts that:

Empower Black, Indigenous, and people of color communities who have been left out of decision-making processes that directly affect their lives,
Are accountable and responsive to their community’s needs,
Involve the affected community in shaping issue priorities and help sustain the organization and,
Work to develop and strengthen their leadership as they create and implement community organizing strategies

By supporting TPF, you are resourcing a local decision-making process that funds spaces like Detroit People's Food Co-op, Healing by Choice, the Chip Bag Project , Detroit is Different, Better Men Outreach, Detroit Safety Team, Michigan Environmental Justice Coalition, and many others.

What is the origin of this work in Detroit–and where is it headed?

The Transforming Power Fund is an attempt to put into practice the 12 Recommendations for Detroit Funders produced in 2015 by Allied Media Projects and Detroit Peoples’ Platform. TPF is also informed by the 2017 report, Changing the Conversation: Philanthropic Funding and Community Organizing in Detroit, which also set the stage for a radical shift in philanthropy in Detroit.

Since their founding in 2019, the Transforming Power Fund has distributed over $2.2M to grassroots organizations and community leaders advocating for systems change.

What is the Resource Generation Michigan chapter?

Resource Generation is a community of young people with wealth organizing for economic justice. We redistribute personal & inherited wealth to movement spaces and solidarity economy work. In Michigan, we have been organizing for more than five years, primarily in Detroit and Ann Arbor. In 2020, Detroit members from RG moved $20,000 to TPF and we’d like to more than exceed that goal this year!
