The Surge Project, Incorporated, founded in June 2016, is a 501(c)(3) organization birthed out of the pain and understanding of tragic loss due to gun violence. We are helping save lives one mentee, one school, and one neighborhood at a time!

Imagine getting a phone call at almost midnight hearing the words “Bobo is dead”. Our founder and current executive director, Te’Andria Ellis, received that phone call on June 26, 2012 about her brother. Terrell Ellis, II had become a victim of a senseless crime that took away his life as a son, brother, and father at the age of 22 years old on the west side of Birmingham. Almost ten years later, in 2021, Birmingham hit a record for the highest number of homicides in 25 years. It should also be noted that in Alabama, fifty-four (54%) percent of gun deaths are suicides and forty-two (42%) percent are homicides. This is compared to sixty-one (61%) percent and thirty-six (36%) percent respectively, nationwide.

"T." turned her pain into energy that could stop another family getting a call in the middle of the night. No more t-shirts, no more prayer vigils, no more endless lives lost. No more short graves. Our kids should be able to grow up.
