OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The relationship between sexuality and religion in Uganda.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

Establish the relationship between sexual orientation, gender identity and religion in Uganda.
To determine the reasons why religious institution fuel homophobia against the LGBTIQ+ community.
To seek possible solutions to minimize hate speech by the religious institutions in Uganda towards the LGBTIQ+ community.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

Which religious institution fuel homophobia mostly in Uganda?
Why do religious leader fuel homophobia against the LGBTIQ+ community?
Has the growth of Pentecostal churches in Uganda boosted the spread of hate speech towards the LGBTIQ+?
What alternative possible solution possible solutions should be put in place to remedy the situation?

CONTENT SCOPE

The study is concentrating of relationship between sexual orientation, gender identity in Uganda.

GEOGRAPHICAL AREA

The research is going to be conducted in the Kampala Metropolitan Area in central Uganda.

TIME SCOPE

The research will cover a period of 6 months from 10th June 2024 to 10th December 2024.

The researches considers this period because it is long enough to provide relevant data.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE RESEARCH

The findings will be great significance to civil society organizations, government and policy makers, activists and the inter-religious council of Uganda to guide them to formulate informed decisions.

The study will immensely contribute to building knowledge in the field of sexual orientation and gender identity in Uganda and Africa as whole.

The research may provoke further research in the area of sexual orientation, gender identity and religion in other parts of Africa.

The will give the advocacy of the LGBTIQ+ rights substance.

METHODOLOGY RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The study will establish research instruments to collect data in the field such as questionnaire. Self-administered questionnaires will be given to the respondents and those able to read and write. Those who cannot read and write will be helped by the research team to read and write.

Besides the questionnaire, the researchers will conduct focus group discussions with correspondents that were unable to read and write, to simplify and make under stable questionnaires, so they can easily answer.

VALIDITY OF RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS

Borgan and Gall (2003) define validity as degree to which a test measures what it purports to measure.

A pilot study will be carried out to appraise the data collection instruments, soundness of instruments and to estimate the time schedules to tackle the items.

To establish validity, instruments will be given to experts to evaluate the relevance of each item in the instruments of the objective. Adjustments of the data collection instruments will be made where necessary with relevant consultations.

INSTRUMENT RELIABILITY

procedure demonstrates (Best and Ekhan 2023).

We will ensure reliability by asking the same questions in the instrument to different sub samples, over different time intervals.

In this respect, when the responses of the subsamples of the questions express a positive correlations express a positive correlation, then it is evidence of consistency.

SAMPLING PROCEDURE

The study will deploy two sampling techniques that is stratified sampling where the population will be divide into sub populations.

The stratified random sampling will achieve the desired representation from various sub-groups in the community where they will be selected basing on criteria.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The study will be a combination of both qualitative and quantitative research designs for purposes of making a valid conclusion.

A descriptive survey design will be used for the utilization of semi-structured interviews, key informant interviews and focus group discussions to enable the respondents describe.

This design will be used to obtain information concerning the current status of the phenomena under study and describe what exists with respect to variables or conditions in a situation.

By using a descriptive design, both qualitative and quantitative data will be collected. Qualitative information will be important to capture the respondents’ feeling, views and sentiments on gender identity, sexual orientation and religion in Uganda.

A quantitative approach will be used to capture the number of religious leaders in this study.

The design is deemed suitable for this study due to its ability to elicit a wide range of baseline 7 information.

It is therefore, deemed suitable to facilitate smooth operations that would make the research as efficient as possible to describe the origin and extent of the problem.

DATA COLLECTION METHODS

Data for this study will be gathered by multi methods in order to collect quantitative data from both primary and secondary resources.

The primary data will be gathered by use of different collection methods from the field.
These include interview schedules, key informant interview guide, and focus group discussions.

The tool will allow the interviewer to obtain data as well as details he would want known about the respondents.

The secondary data will be gathered from reviewing existing documents, and making analysis of different relevant documents containing information about sexual orientation, gender identity and religion.

Further review of existing relevant literature such as text books, newspapers, magazines and journals will be used.

The review of existing data will help to identify the knowledge gap which this study is attempted to fill.

DATA QUALITY CONTROL

To control quality, we will advance to use validity and reliability co-efficient of 70%.

The instruments will be piloted in areas that will not be included in the study sample and modified to give and improve the validity and reliability co-efficient of at least 0.70

Items of validity and reliability co-efficient of at least 0.70 are accepted as valid and reliable in research (Katuori and Pals 1993).

Research assistants (enumerators) will be recruited and trained for one week on how to collect data.

The semi-structured interview questions using interview guides, key informat guide and focus discussins will be pre-tested and edited and where necessary to cover the identified gaps.

A meeting will be held with the research assistants on a daily basis to discuss the challanges that are met during the data collection process.

DATA PROCESSING 8 After the completion of data collection exercise, the raw data in the form of field notes, will be

transcribed and expanded into more complete narratives at the end of each working day, to establish the accuracy, consistency and completeness of information gathered from the field to make corrections.

The processing of data will be done through editing and coding where the raw data (source data) will be arranged and organized, so that useful information could be extracted from it.

This process will evolve deleting data which will not be necessary for study and checking of spelling mistakes, consistency and relevancy.

Coding will involve categorizing variables into limited number of categories. The information that which fall under same reference code category will be categorized together in line with the study objective.

The data will be organized into a well understandable set of notes, arranged and expanded for analysis. This will be done after the whole exercise of data collection.

DATA ANALYSIS

The data will be filled in the questionnaire, copied and analyzed by tallying it and tabling it in frequency tables.

Data obtained will be entered into a computer and analyzed using a computerized data packages to obtain frequencies and percentages.

Statistical techniques will be utilized in data analysis and distribution. For example, the percentage and frequency distribution will be utilized to analyze data according to the profile characteristics.

Means and standard deviation will be used to determine the relationship between sexual orientation, gender identity and religion in Uganda.

Person's linear correlation will be used to determine the person's linear correlation coefficient (PLCC).

Statistical techniques will be deployed for their ability to analyze both qualitative and quantitative data simultaneously.

DATA PRESENTATION

Data will be presented in graphs, pie charts, tables to facilitate interpretation of the findings.

ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS

Data from respondents will be strictly used for purposes for only, and the participants will be assured of the same. Confidentiality and privacy of respondents will be ensured.

Complete anonymity will be guaranteed to the study respondents; the actual names of the respondents will not be used during interviews, and thus will not be used during interviews and thus not recorded anywhere in the research report.

Pseudonyms will be used hence all respondents will have their privacy protected.
