A juice bar in North Charleston will be a space to preserve Gullah Geechee language, culture and history.

Gullah Geechee language is a rich Atlantic creole created by descendants of Africans who were enslaved on agricultural plantations in coastal regions of South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

Unfortunately, this language is currently considered endangered due to a declining number of people who speak Gullah Geechee fluently. This puts our language at risk of disappearing. If our language disappears that means our culture disappears too.

Da Geechee Juice Bar & Classroom is on a mission to preserve Gullah Geechee culture one juice at time.

The business model for our project is innovative and sustainable. The juice bar will serve as a front-facing retail space where customers can enjoy bussin (delicious) and healthy drinks while learning about Gullah Geechee culture. In the back of the establishment, there will be a commissary kitchen to learn, teach or serve traditional Gullah Geechee dishes.

On our vision board we have a community hub where people can go to authentically experience Gullah Geechee culture through food, drinks and holistic education.

Da Juice Bar: Our juice bar will be the face of our operation, serving fresh juices, smoothies and more made from locally sourced ingredients. We believe that health is wealth, and we want to make it accessible and affordable for our community to make healthy choices.

Da Commissary Kitchen: In the back, this space will provide a launchpad for local food start-ups to start or grow their businesses. By providing access to a commercial kitchen, we aim to lower the barriers to entry for aspiring food entrepreneurs in our community.

Da Content Studio: A storytelling studio to curate and preserve stories of people from, moved to or visiting Charleston, SC.

Da Classroom: To host a variety of classes, from wellness workshops to Gullah Geechee language lessons.

We’re seeking to raise $55,000 to bring our vision board of opening a Geechee Juice Bar & Classroom to life. These funds will go towards securing a location in North Charleston, SC, renovating the space, purchasing equipment for the juice bar and kitchen.
