Avondale Meadows formerly known as the Meadows, is an eastside neighborhood, bounded by Fall Creek, Sherman Drive, and 38th and 46th streets. The Meadows became a destination for housing, shopping, and multi-use community spaces following the Post World War II surge of growth. For years, the Meadows was home to one of the highest-profile dinner theatres in the Midwest making the Meadows a desired place to live and play. However, by the 1980s the racial landscape of the area changed and the area became a place of urban blight. Today there is a strong revitalization movement that was established in 2017 focused on bringing resources and services back into the community for the betterment of residents and partnerships.

BU Wellness Network believes the strength of our community comes from our resilience and ability to celebrate Black culture and the creatives that make it, in spite of racial inequities. We want to celebrate Black creatives and the power of community building by showcasing talented Black artists of our city.

UJIMA: A SOULFUL DINNER EXPERIENCE is that showcase. UJIMA is a 4-part dinner series that takes place in 4 historically Black neighborhoods of Indianapolis highlighting Black culinary artists, visual artists, and entertainers. Each dinner has a different theme and different artists to give attendees an opportunity to celebrate much of the city's great talent.
