Two Years of Courage, Connection, and Learning with AFSO

Shabnam left school at 12, married at 15, and raised three children—yet never stopped studying. Now she’s learning English, algebra, and world history through AFSO.
Nadia’s eyesight was damaged by years of tailoring work. After being expelled from university, she stayed alone in the city—without her family, electricity, or internet—just to keep studying engineering.
Hakeema lost her father to the Taliban at 16. She supported her family, finished school, and with AFSO’s help, earned a top TOEFL score and a scholarship to an American college.

These are just a few of the remarkable women Afghan Female Student Outreach (AFSO) has supported over the past two years. AFSO is an international collective of volunteer professors offering real-time, university-level courses to Afghan women barred from education. Our goal: to help them become the future leaders of Afghanistan.

Our celebration on September 14 marks two watershed moments: our second-year anniversary, celebrated despite Taliban crackdowns and U.S. bans on Afghans; and the initiation of our pathway toward an American accredited degree through our partnership with the Global Higher Education Alliance for the 21st Century at Bard College. Join us on September 14 for an hour of updates, Q&A, and conversation, featuring UN Special Rapporteur Richard Bennett, Afghan rapper Sonita Alizada, and current AFSO students and professors. Attendees will hear their stories and have the chance to connect directly with those shaping this extraordinary movement.
