Every independent film is built by a community.

At a time when much of the public imagination around immigrants is shaped by images of raids, detention, and labor, What the Pier Gave Us offers something rarely seen: immigrants in nature, in leisure, and in conversation with the world around them.

Over the past four years, the film has received support from the Sundance Institute, Catapult Film Fund, ARRI Camera Systems, AXS Film Fund, and the Brooklyn Arts Council, completed 36 observational filming days, and secured most of its principal protagonists. Grants have helped build this foundation, but they fund only a small percentage of independent films.

There are still New York City's wildlife migrations to capture, hundreds of hours of footage to shape, and the careful work of editing, sound, color, accessibility, and community engagement ahead.
