Story

Lucy's Story

Lucy Sayagie was the first girl in her family to go to school. After doing math in the dirt, her father decided it was time for her to learn from real math books. When Lucy was young, it wasn't normal for girls to be educated; her father had to give up his high-ranking status in the community for her to go to school. Today, not only is she an educated woman, but she is one of the first women in her community to open a school, and now she runs it sustainably with the help of Humans for Education.

Create more success like Lucy:

  • A scholarship is $30/month, it's $1/day. It's less than your coffee to send a child to school and give a family more financial stability.
  • Business training, mentorship, and the resources needed to start the business is $85/month, which is $2.8/day which is still cheaper than your coffee to ensure a woman can start a business with all the training and materials she needs.

Our Goal

This year we are on a mission to help more women like Lucy. We want to create sustainability for women in the communities near Lucy.

Together, we can create small businesses for women.

  • Businesses that will sustain their families
  • Businesses that will feed their children, mothers, sisters, and brothers
  • Businesses that will ensure they can afford the healthcare they deserve

Hundreds of women have applied, and all of them have at least one child already in our school system. All of these women are the sole breadwinners of their families.

Thanks to Folsom Rotary and the Rotary Club of Muthaiga, 85 women have already been sponsored!! Let's ensure more women can receive the businesses they need to support their families!

The Women Behind the Scenes

It's surreal to think about the hardship these women deal with on a daily basis. This is Joyce, she is the mother to Caleb, one of the sponsored students by Humans for Education. Joyce has lived in Nkoilale, Kenya, for her entire life. When she met Humans for Education, she asked for a sponsorship for her son Caleb.

Since Caleb received his sponsorship, their family has been able to use their funds on other essentials such as more food for the family, healthcare, and even electricity. Even though Caleb's fees have been paid, there are still many obstacles for Joyce's family to overcome. Joyce's mother-in-law (below) is fetching water from the only water source that is close to them. Even though there are some more funds available now due to the sponsorship, the obstacles are numerous. At the schools we work with, Humans for Education provide clean water filters and hand washing stations; we also provide indicators to families, so they know when water is safe to drink, but this is just one of the numerous examples of the difficulties in the daily lives.

Joyce and her mother-in-law are hardworking women who spend their days tending to their children, ensuring their families are provided for, and working at least 1-3 businesses to generate some income for the family. Joyce lives with her nuclear and extended family in a small community where they all work to support each other.

This is where Joyce lives and works. Joyce built her home with her own hands and the help of her sisters.

Receiving a scholarship for a son or daughter or the training and resources to start a small business means a world of difference for the women we work with at Humans for Education.

Scholarships for students not only mean a brighter future for the student and more income and job opportunities for them when they graduate, but it also means more financial stability for their families.

  • A scholarship is $30/month, it's $1/day. It's less than your coffee to send a child to school and give a family more financial stability.

Businesses for women mean that they can afford to send more of their children to school, they can work to break the cycle of poverty for more of their family, they can empower their community, they can afford three meals per day, and they can actually afford healthcare. Financial stability should be priceless.

  • Business training, mentorship, and the resources needed to start the business is $85/month, which is $2.8/day which is still cheaper than your coffee to ensure a woman can start a business with all the training and materials she needs.

Everyone deserves the opportunity for a sustainable life. Together we can make that a reality.
