Mel's Story

Last year a friend introduced me to this amazing little non-profit doing BIG things in the heart of downtown Reno.  I fell in love the second I stepped foot on the Urban Teaching Farm & witnessed kids learning where their food comes from, how to grow it & how it impacts a healthy body & mind.  And when I saw them eating Kale & Carrots right out of the ground, I knew I wanted to get involved.  Today, I serve as the President of the Board of Directors because I believe in helping create a bright future for our kids, but it must be built on a healthy foundation.  Urban Roots is helping kids & families build that healthy foundation.  Kids are not only excited about healthy food, but also academics  as their educators weave in core curriculum like math, science, engineering, literature & art.  They are bringing learning back to life.  In a community where 1 in 4 students is food insecure, obesity & diabetes in kids surpasses 25% & Nevada ranks 50th in the chance for success indicator, the need to support the good work Urban Roots is doing is great.  I hope you'll join me in making sure this organization can continue serving our community in BIG ways!

About Urban Roots

Our mission includes working with children in either their schools or at our Farm. The emergence of the pandemic and resulting school closures led us to cancel all of our Spring and Summer programming which included fieldtrips, home school enrichment, parent/child workshops, and teacher trainings.

We’ve had to make major budget cuts and significant changes to how we serve families. It’s been an overwhelming time for this small but dedicated staff.  Urban Roots is mission driven and has created an incredible alternative to bringing hands-on educational opportunities to families in their home, but we are still making up lost revenue from cancelled programming.

Please help Urban Roots today so we can continue moving forward together and manifesting a more vibrant, healthy future than ever before.
