Affordable Legal Help for Immigrant Communities in Central NY
More than ever before, our immigrant communities—mothers, fathers, and children—need affordable legal help to make their case for permanent residency or asylum. In rural areas like our own, these resources are few and far between and attorneys often overworked.
We are asking for your help to establish and maintain a legal assistance fund to pay for attorneys and keep open local organizations who are already doing this critical work.
One such organization is Mohawk Valley Region (MVR) project, led by Tasha N. Gottschalk-Fielding, an attorney working in partnership with the Cornell Farmworker Legal Assistance Clinic. Operating out of Cooperstown, Tasha is overseeing 26 open cases across five counties, including Delaware County. She has also partnered with Hiscock Legal Aid and the Volunteer Lawyers Project to expand capacity and boost awareness across the state.
Tasha’s funding was recently cut by 50%. Open Catskills and others are helping to raise $55,000 to keep the lights on at the MVR Project. Without that funding, Tasha's current clients will be left without representation. In addition Tasha's efforts to partner with organizations like Open Catskills to create legal clinics in Delaware and Otsego County will not be able to move forward. We desperately need Tasha's work to continue. Please help support this campaign.
Any amount helps!
