“I expected Americans to know nothing about Iraq but the 2003 war. I wasn't wrong, but what got my attention is that they weren't embarrassed to ask questions about things they did not know about my country. If I corrected them about something, they were okay about it. And they were all ears when I was telling them about Iraq.” -Ghada, Iraq
Ghada, an Iraqi student, engaged in dialogues, shared meals, and participated in cultural events during the Iraqi Youth Leadership Program (IYLEP) in Seattle. She was surprised by how little Americans knew about her country. But while there were misconceptions, there was also a genuine curiosity and openness to learn. Ghada had honest conversations with many people, correcting misperceptions and deepening understanding. She returned home with a new appreciation for how cultural exchange can dismantle stereotypes.
At FIUTS, we know that connection is the antidote to stereotypes. When people meet, listen, and learn about each other's lives, something remarkable happens: barriers dissolve. We start to see beyond the surface, recognizing our shared humanity and the richness of our diverse experiences. Through these connections, fear is replaced by understanding, suspicion by trust, and isolation by community.
Your gift to the 2024 FIUTS Annual Campaign will help shift perspectives and broaden worldviews for both students and community members in the coming year. By giving today, you’ll create opportunities for meaningful connections that have the power to transform how we see each other and the world.
Angela Maduro, a participant in the FIUTS Study of the U.S. Institute (SUSI) program from Zimbabwe, shared her own journey of personal transformation:
“The SUSI program nurtured my confidence and solidified my identity as a leader. I’ve become more resilient and determined, with a broadened perspective on how to make my community better. I no longer just envision a better world—I actively work towards creating it, bringing other leaders along who share my commitment to gender equality and societal advancement.”
Angela’s story reflects the power of FIUTS programs to inspire not just understanding but action. Her experience didn’t just open her eyes to new ideas—it helped her realize her own capacity to lead change and bring others along with her.
Your support is vital. With your contribution, FIUTS can continue to create meaningful connections that empower both students and community members to broaden their worldviews and become catalysts for change. Together, we can overcome the stereotypes that divide us and build a more connected, compassionate world.
Thank you for your commitment to building bridges and shifting perspectives.
