In March we got an early morning call from a veteran who needed support.

She'd sent emails, dialed phone numbers, and was doing everything she could to get help.

After connected with our team, she was able to get her bill paid.

But what stayed with her wasn't just the utility bill.

It was being told to take her time. To explain what was going on. To know that someone was listening, and that everything was going to be okay.

That's not just a utility story. That's a mental health story.

And it's not unique.

Last year, we provided support for 831 individuals presenting with mental and behavioral health needs, making mental health our third most frequently requested service. Each case represented a person seeking not only access to care and resources, but also stability, support, and renewed hope for recovery and well-being.

Financial instability is often more than just a money problem; it can create ongoing stress impacting different parts of a person's life. Utility shutoff notices, food insecurity, and repeated barriers to assistance can take a serious emotional toll. When basic needs go unmet and support feels out of reach, it can intensify anxiety, depression, and acute emotional crisis.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and right now, veterans across the Carolinas are carrying far more than their fair share of mental health challenges.
