What makes VAI different than other art programs?

VAI staff mentors students and encourage them to integrate creativity into every aspect of thinking, education, and life. This results in a greater thirst for knowledge in many areas of study, as well as an increased curiosity of the world and strengthening their personal character.

The Vision

The vision of the Visual Art Institute is to provide an exceptional visual art program as a powerful tool of enhancing the educational experience. The desire outcome is to have students build life skills of problem-solving, self-confidence, independent critical thinking, and collaboration through positive mentor and peer relationships. We reach out to underserved youth of diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds to enrich the educational prosperity of all. We provide students and opportunity to express themselves in a safe, nurturing, creative environment.

History

The Visual Art Institute was founded in 1978 by Stephanie Burn. In 1998, Bruce Robertson became the Executive Director. Since the founding of VAI, thousands of youth have had the opportunity to work with dedicated professional artists in a variety of media. VAI works with public schools and offers tuition assistance to provide better access to diverse populations. VAI has become an essential part of the Salt Lake art community by expanding their art programs and services. Many students earn local, state, and regional awards, with many receiving scholarships and entrance into top universities and art schools throughout the country. 2023 marks VAI’s 45^th anniversary serving the community.
