The Problem:
First responders are rarely trained to recognize the diverse communication styles of non-verbal individuals or those with intellectual/physical disabilities. This gap has had deadly consequences:
Police mistake autistic meltdowns for aggression.
Paramedics miss critical medical needs when patients don't verbalize in familiar ways.
Power outages and lack of training for first responders reduce the efficacy of AAC devices, potentially leaving people stranded without a voice.
Our Solution:
SOSpeak provides universal, non-powered emergency cards that:
Explain Needs Quickly: Phrases like “I’m non-verbal” or “Don’t touch—I need space” in high-contrast text.
Guide First Responders: Back of cards list de-escalation steps (e.g., “Speak slowly, turn off sirens”).
Ensure Backup: Includes emergency contact info and support-person instructions.
Why This Matters:
These cards are designed in memory of autistic individuals killed during police interactions and for those left vulnerable when technology fails. We’re turning tragedy into tools—because communication barriers should never cost lives.
