Dr. Gary L. Bowman, the Superintendent of Neshaminy School District from 1992 until his retirement in 2002, passed away on Wednesday, April 3, 2024. Dr. Bowman devoted his entire professional life to education and public service as a teacher, school administrator in multiple roles, and an active leader in community organizations both before and after his retirement. He was universally admired for his friendly, outgoing demeanor and his unwavering dedication to and energetic support of Neshaminy academic and athletic programs, the district's students, his colleagues, and the entire Neshaminy communty.
Dr. Bowman started his career after graduating in 1964 from Millersville State College (now University) where he met his wife, Joan, who was also studying for a teaching degree (Joan passed away in 2021 after 47 years of marriage). Dr. Bowman held a Masters of Education from Trenton State College (now The College of New Jersey), a Doctorate of Education from Nova University and received his Superintendent and Principal Certifications from Bucknell University. He taught Industrial Arts / Electronics, Special Education in the Centennial School District from 1964 to 1969. He then served as Director of Federal Programs and Curriculum Coordinator for Bristol Township School District until 1975.
At Neshaminy School District, he was Principal at Lower Southampton Elementary School from 1975 until 1981, Assistant Superintendent of Schools and Deputy Superintendent until 1992, and finally Superintendent until his retirement.
The Bowman family has requested that in lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the non-profit Neshaminy Education Foundation, which is solely dedicated to providing resources for Neshaminy schools and scholarhips for graduating Neshaminy High School seniors.
