The STAR Institute is at the forefront of providing therapy, education, awareness, and research for sensory health. Why Sensory Health Matters

Sensory processing refers to (i) how our nervous system receives and interprets information from the environment through our senses and (ii) how our brain-body responds to what it senses. It is about how we make sense of what we sense, and what we do about it.

Our senses encompass sight, sound, touch, taste, smell, and the less recognized vestibular (balance), proprioceptive (body awareness), and interoceptive (internal sensations) systems.

How Sensations Impact Daily Life

For others the process is disorganizing because their nervous system does not register enough data and cannot identify which sensory events are important and which are not. For individuals with sensory sensitivities, everyday experiences like a bustlingstreet or scratchy clothing can trigger intense distress. But sensory processing differences do not just change how much we register and respond to sensation.

When someone has difficulty distinguishing the meaning of different sensations and the specific details of how their body feels, it can affect the way their posture develops. This means that their body may not learn how to stand, sit, or move in efficient, effective, and coordinated ways. It's like missing an important instruction manual for how to hold yourself up and move smoothly. And when posture does not mature adaptively and effectively it can disrupt development in many many other areas.

Additionally, differences in how much someone responds to sensations or their ability to differentiate the qualities of sensations also affect the development of motor skills. This often results in a person having challenges planning and coordinating their movements effectively. It's like having a disrupted communication system between the body and the brain, making it harder to figure out how to move in a coordinated way.

These differences show up in all humans when we are stressed or taxed and they show up in neurodivergent populations in more intense and specific ways. In childhood, unsupported sensory differences can derail a student's ability to learn, participate, and flourish in dramatic and sometimes devastating ways.
