Upgrading to a Commercial Sanitizing Washing Machine for Our Lady of Good Health Rushoroza Hospital

Several years ago, my grandfather, a retired dentist hoping to use his skills to help people across the globe, loaded as many suitcases as the airline would allow. He packed PPE, medical equipment, and dental supplies and began the long voyage to Kabale, Uganda to set up a dental clinic in a local hospital. He returned several more times, each time bringing additional supplies with him.

Inspired by his work, our Bright Smiles community recently launched a campaign to help the hospital purchase its first washing machine. The response was overwhelming — we reached our goal so quickly that we were able to rethink what would make the greatest impact.

Because of the generosity of so many donors, we realized that instead of purchasing a basic household washer, we could take a far more meaningful step and upgrade our goal to a commercial sanitizing washing machine capable of true medical-grade hygiene.

This upgraded machine is essential for Our Lady of Good Health Hospital, which washes a large volume of heavily soiled maternity and medical linens. Currently, women from the surrounding village — many of them volunteers — wash all of the linens by hand, exposing themselves to difficult labor and potentially infectious materials.

A commercial sanitizing washing machine would:

Thoroughly disinfect linens exposed to blood, birth fluids, and infectious diseases
Greatly reduce the risk of disease transmission, including HIV and Ebola
Improve safety standards for maternity, post-surgical, and inpatient care
Significantly ease the physical burden on the volunteer women who currently scrub linens by hand
Increase the hospital’s ability to maintain clean, hygienic bedding every day

Bright Smiles has confirmed with the hospital administration that infrastructure is ready — the space, water supply, and electrical capacity are already in place to install and begin using the commercial sanitizing machine immediately.

Your continued support will allow us to complete this upgrade and provide the hospital with a machine that truly meets their needs and protects both patients and volunteers.

Please consider contributing to help us finalize the purchase of a commercial sanitizing washing machine for Our Lady of Good Health Rushoroza Hospital. Together, we can build on our momentum and deliver a lasting improvement in health and safety for the community of Kabale.
