Renovating our 14,000 square foot building will allow Double Vision Skating and Recreation Center the ability to fully offer equitable and accessible recreation opportunities and a community gathering space for leisure activities. Double Vision Center, a 501c3 nonprofit, was founded in 2007. The Center’s name comes from R&B group, Double Vision created in 1982, by twin brothers Donnie Brewer and Lonnie Brewer Sr. After traveling and preforming across the nation sharing stage space with national artists such as The Revolution, and Jr. Walker & the All Stars, Double Vision returned to Albion, Michigan and began hosting local talent shows and events for youth. After forming their nonprofit, The Center expanded programming from talent shows to also including creative arts programs such as jewelry making and open mic nights. Their events have also included motivational speaking engagements, and numerous fundraisers for health related issues in collaboration with United Way, the NAACP and James Gamble Association. Programs offered have continued to expand through the years to include facilitating juvenile court days to help youth get back on track with volunteer projects designed to have youth invest and feel part of the community. Double Vision believes that community starts when youth can come together and work collaboratively to empower themselves to recognize their worth in the world and pursue it whole heartedly.

Although the building at 200 N. Clinton Street in downtown Albion has remained closed for many years due to extensive renovations needed, Double Vision Center has still held roller skating and music events, along with youth programs using their parking lot, and other local locations. However, the inability to fully run our programs has substantially limited our income in order to move forward with any renovations. Improvements to structural and cosmetic aspects of the building include the roof, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing systems as well as updating equipment within the Center. We are seeking funding through multiple avenues of grants and loans in addition to fundraising events. Our goal through this platform is $100,000 to provide matching funds for grants and bank loans we are pursuing. Once open, our community center will offer roller skating, basketball, indoor walking space, group aerobic & dance classes, jewelry making, board & card games available, and meeting space for local organizations and agencies. The Center will be able to reestablish and expand its after school program to provide mentoring and tutoring for youth academic needs in addition to recreation and creative arts programs to improve mental health and self-esteem for our local youth to aid in their future success. Creative arts programs have been a longstanding component of the nonprofit to allow youths from diverse backgrounds to come together and express their creativity through jewelry making and musical expression. The Center also believes in recreation as a main component to increase teamwork while meeting physical fitness needs. Our established youth programs are dedicated to having youth work together and increase teamwork and collaboration and we want to extend that approach to our community center to help restore positive social interactions through community engagement and recreation, which is vital to reestablishing strong support systems within the Albion community. Aside from dedicated after school program hours, the Center will be publicly accessible during the week and weekend. The facility will also be available for birthday parties, weddings, corporate meetings, and community events. Double Vision Center believes in serving at-risk youth and low income families through programs and accessible resources to work collaboratively together in order to bridge divisions and grow a thriving community for all.
