When we first started working together with local health promoters from the Ministry of Health, there was always one promoter who was particularly engaged in the work of bringing safe water to communities. Sacha, a young Kichwa woman, works for the local health center serving rural Kichwa communities. She spends hours each day walking from house to house, checking on patients, bringing medications, giving vaccinations, and teaching public health topics like waterborne disease prevention.

As Sacha became more involved with our Safe Water Program in several communities, she grew more excited about the impact of the work. She wanted to bring the program to her own community so they could have the same opportunity. About a year later, we are doing exactly that! Sacha now has the chance to continue this work right where she lives, in the community of Atacapi.

This community has 35 families (over 200 people) who are participating in this program, which includes a drinking water quality study, health impact surveys, four full-day Water & Health Education seminars, and household water filter implementation. Atacapi also has their own Safe Water Committee, pictured below with Sacha, which works alongside us to benefit their fellow community members.

In short, we're not just giving access to safe drinking water, but also providing public health education and setting up the community for long-term success!
