Each year on June 23^rd, the United States commemorates National Hydration Day. Adequate hydration is essential to living a healthy life, but is generally overlooked, especially when it comes to farmworkers.

Farmworkers are some of the most essential workers in our communities and often work long hours in hot and dangerous conditions without access to safe hydration. In fact, U.S. farmworkers are 35 times more likely to die from heat-stress than other civilian workers as reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. With rising temperatures due to climate change, farmworkers are even more at risk.

Farmwork is a strenuous physical activity with there being little to no shade in the fields. Farmworkers also wear long-sleeved shirts and pants to protect themselves from pesticide exposure. Proteus provides Health & Safety Training to farmworkers every summer, teaching about the dangers of heat stress and heat stroke and how farmworkers can take care of themselves and each other. Having access to cold, clean water is one of the best ways to stay cool and you can help!
