Food Insecurity is still a real problem.

Families and individuals are having to decide how they are going to stretch their paychecks or pay for a nice meal. Ever since COVID, the number of people struggling with food insecurity and hunger has increased and is increasing with the rising costs of food. We believe that in a country like ours, no one should go hungry. As a result, we opened our Donations-Only Restaurant in 2018 to make sure we did our part and fed as many hungry bellies as we could. In the last 5 years, we have fed 100,000 people and counting!

We couldn't have done it without the support of our generous community. We are calling on you once again to help us continue feeding the need. It doesn't matter how much you have to give; a little goes a long way!!

Who Are We?

The Beginnings of Drexell & Honeybee's:

Drexell & Honeybee's officially launched on March 26, 2018, but it first began as an idea years before!

Before we were a restaurant we operated as a mobile food delivery service. We gave food to seniors in our community who didn't have the means or ability to prepare their own meals.

Meet Carol

She enlarged our perspective on certain things and helped transform the way we wanted to feed our community.

On this particular occasion, I shared with her that a group of friends and I were meeting at a local cafe Saturday to catch up and enjoy a coffee. When I said this, her countenance changed. I asked Carol what was wrong and she said, “I wish I could do that.”

Those six words stayed with me. I offered Carol some money to treat her and a friend out to dinner, but sadly a week later she removed herself from the hot meals delivery list. I couldn’t understand why because I knew she needed the help. A friend told me that she most likely felt singled out and ashamed of her circumstances.

That stayed with me. I wanted a way to offer this "luxury" to those who couldn't afford it and I wanted to do it in a way where they didn't feel ashamed or singled out. Hence, Drexell & Honeybee's Donations-Only Restaurant; a place where ALL or welcome and where no one has to pay!

We Feed the Need, Build Community, & Restore Dignity

WE FEED THE NEED

Our visitors receive restaurant-level, Southern-Cooked meals with all the trimmings! We have people from all walks of life and economic backgrounds sharing a meal. We’re seeing people who would never otherwise come into contact with each other, sharing their stories and getting to know each other.

This is made possible because of our donations-only model. When you enter Drexell & Honeybee’s you won’t find a cash register or suggested menu prices. Guests simply come in, receive their meal, and enjoy. We do, however, have a donation box in a private area where guests can leave a small donation if they’d like or are able to. This removes the pressure of worrying about how to pay for a meal, or not being able to donate because in the restaurant we don’t make a big deal about the donations.

Does this model work?

This model has been serving our community well for the last five years. Although, we don’t usually receive that many donations at our location (which is to be understood), our online community and local businesses have been able to fund this endeavor and we couldn’t do it without them. We would like to give a special shout-out to The Lion's Club, Woodmen Life, and Episcopal Zion Church for their generosity. We are indebted to our online community, and those who visit our restaurant from out of state with the intention of giving a donation. Together we are feeding the need and fighting food insecurity.

So far to date, we have been able to give:

About 130 meals a day

20,000 meals a year

And 100,000 meals in 5 years

AND

that’s because we are only open from Tuesday-Thursday from 11 am-1 pm!

We, a small restaurant in Brewton, Alabama, are making a difference in our community and it’s because of you. We’d like to and plan to do this for many more years and kindly ask for your support.
