Whitney came to us with small facial growths that we initially hoped were benign “baby warts,” something we commonly see in young horses. When the largest growth failed to go away, it was surgically removed and biopsied. The biopsy confirmed that the growths were sarcoids and not malignant, which allowed us to move forward with conservative treatment under veterinary guidance.

Despite topical treatments and careful monitoring, the largest sarcoid returned — and over the past months it has begun to grow rapidly. It is now affecting the delicate tissue around Whitney’s eye and jaw. At this stage, conservative management is no longer working.

We are now at a defining moment in Whitney’s care.

The only way to determine her future is through advanced imaging. On January 5–6, Whitney is scheduled for a CT scan at the University of Minnesota, the closest facility able to provide the level of diagnostics and surgical expertise her case requires.

The CT scan will allow specialists to see how deeply the sarcoid extends and whether surgery — potentially combined with chemotherapy — is possible to remove it and stop further growth. If surgery is viable, Whitney will be given that chance. If the imaging shows the sarcoid cannot be safely treated, then humane euthanasia would be the only remaining option.

This scan gives Whitney answers — and a chance she would not otherwise have.
