Wilkeson's Way Forward

For generations, Wilkeson has stood as a symbol of hard work, resilience, and community pride. As one of Washington’s earliest coal mining towns, Wilkeson helped fuel the expansion of the railroads and the growth of the region. Our sandstone shaped landmarks across the Pacific Northwest, and our timber supported industries that helped build the state.

Today, the historic coke ovens, the Wilkeson School, and the spirit of our handcar races remind us who we are. We are a town proud of its roots, rich in history, and deeply connected to the land. As a gateway to Mount Rainier, Wilkeson has long welcomed those who seek strength, beauty, and belonging.

When the Fairfax Bridge was shuttered, Wilkeson faced an unexpected and immediate challenge. With a critical access route closed, our community was required to act quickly to find a way forward that would protect our local economy, maintain access to public lands, and ensure long-term stability for residents and businesses.

Through Wilkeson’s Way Forward, we now have an opportunity to meet that moment with intention. Our goal is to raise one million dollars to secure 139 acres of land just beyond our historic downtown. This property will be preserved and thoughtfully developed into a community asset that includes trails, parks, natural areas, and gathering spaces for residents and visitors. Any remaining funds will support required environmental and planning studies to ensure responsible stewardship and long-term use of the land.

This project is more than conservation. It is an investment in Wilkeson’s future. By protecting and enhancing this land, we strengthen our local economy, create new opportunities for recreation and tourism, and ensure that Wilkeson’s story continues to be told with pride.

Please join us at the Wilkeson’s Way Forward Dinner and Auction on April 18th. Doors open at 5:30 PM. We would be honored to have you join us as we bring our community together to support this important effort.

Thank you for your generous support of this campaign. Your belief in this work helps safeguard Wilkeson’s heritage while helping our town move forward with resilience and purpose.

With gratitude,
