In 1851, Sojourner Truth stood before a crowd and asked a question that still resonates today: “Ain’t I a woman?” She spoke of laboring in the fields, bearing injustice, and demanding recognition in a world that sought to erase her voice. She challenged those in power to acknowledge the strength, intellect, and humanity of Black women.

With the stroke of a pen, words like “women,” “underrepresented,” “minority,” “antiracist,” and “equity” are being erased from federally funded arts projects. The institutions that once claimed to support diversity are backing down. But Castle of our Skins—a woman-led, Black-led, antiracist organization—will not be silenced.

For nearly 12 years, we have championed Black artistry in a field that has historically excluded it. This Women’s History Month, we are celebrating the incredible Black women who have shaped our work—from the composers we perform to the poets, dancers, and educators who bring our mission to life. But make no mistake: this is about more than celebration. This is about survival. When powerful institutions erase Black voices, we must speak louder.

When funding disappears, we must invest in ourselves. Our goal this March is to raise $12,000 for 12 years of mission-driven work—work that uplifts Black women, preserves artistic freedom, and fights against the erasure of our stories.
