Women's History Month
This Women’s History Month, we celebrate the women whose stories shaped Texas—and ensure their legacy continues to be told.
At the Texas State Historical Association, one of the most important ways we preserve those stories is through the Handbook of Texas Women project. Over the past decade, this initiative has become one of the most significant collaborative efforts in the history of the Handbook.
Recently, the project passed an exciting milestone: more than 500 new entries have been added, bringing the total number of entries in the Women category to 1,576 biographies and articles. The 500th new entry honors Sue Margaret Cousins, whose story you can explore through the Handbook of Texas Online.
What makes this achievement especially meaningful is the collaboration behind it. The Handbook of Texas Women project has brought together historians, graduate students, authors, members of the Executive Advisory Committee, and TSHA Board members. Even during challenging times for the organization, the project remained active and continues to serve as a vital platform for research and scholarship focused on women’s history.
Yet there are still many stories waiting to be discovered and documented.
Your support helps TSHA continue expanding this work—supporting research, commissioning new scholarship, and making the stories of Texas women freely accessible to students, educators, and the public through the Handbook of Texas Online.
This Women’s History Month, we invite you to help us continue telling the stories that shape Texas.
