Why Libraries?

The Massachusetts Education Reform Act of 1993 eliminated a state requirement for every public school to fund and maintain a library. Soon after that, elementary schools in Worcester began to see the removal of librarian positions until, by the early 2000s, no elementary school librarians remained.

Parent and community volunteers tried to maintain them, but it was not sustainable. Many library spaces have been converted to classrooms and currently there is no funding from the Worcester Public Schools budget for elementary school libraries. library aides, or school librarians. As it stands, students do not have access to a school library until middle school or high school. Here’s why we want to change that:

Promote Literacy

School libraries promote literacy by giving children daily access to a wide variety of books and reading materials that match their interests and reading levels.

When students can choose books that excite them, they are more motivated to read, which strengthens vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. Research shows that schools with well-stocked libraries and certified librarians see higher reading scores and greater reading motivation.

Support Learning

Libraries and librarians provide resources that support classroom instruction across all subjects. Librarians collaborate with classroom teachers to provide resources that connect with the curriculum and they teach students how to find, evaluate, and use information effectively.

Encourage Lifelong Learners

By nurturing curiosity, independence, and the joy of learning, libraries help children carry positive habits into adulthood. Librarians teach students to think critically and explore independently by showing them how to find, evaluate, and use information—a critical lifelong skill.

Provide equal access

School libraries ensure all students, regardless of background, have access to books and technology. In short, libraries and librarians are essential for academic success and personal growth. Libraries give all students—regardless of background—free access to books.
