Today, on World Spay Day, we celebrate something powerful: prevention.

At Operation Paws for Homes, we are known for transports, fosters, and adoptions. We are known for the joyful “gotcha days” and the long journeys that bring dogs and cats from overcrowded shelters to loving homes.

But there is another side of rescue that doesn’t always make the highlight reel — and it is just as lifesaving.

Community support in the form of spay and neuter.

Over the last 8 years, OPH has funded spay/neuter for over 2500 dogs and more than 400 cats. Already in 2026, we have spayed and neutered 63 cats and 41 dogs. Yesterday we helped get 25 cats fixed in Southwest Virginia and tomorrow OPH will sponsor surgeries for 20 cats in South Carolina.

Every time an animal is spayed or neutered in one of the communities we serve, suffering is prevented before it starts. Litters are avoided. Shelter intake is reduced. Resources stretch further. And fewer animals face the uncertainty of overcrowded shelters.

Many of our shelter partners in under-resourced areas are doing everything they can to keep up with overwhelming intake numbers. Without access to affordable spay/neuter services, the cycle continues. Prevention is the only sustainable way to break it.

When we invest in community spay/neuter:

· We reduce the number of animals entering shelters.

· We ease the burden on already strained rural partners.

· We give more animals a true chance at a safe, healthy life.

· We multiply the impact of every adoption and every transport.

Rescue is not just about moving animals out.
It’s about making sure fewer animals need saving in the first place.

This World Spay Day, we are raising $8,000 to directly fund community spay/neuter programs through our trusted shelter partners. Every dollar goes toward surgeries that will prevent future litters and reduce suffering at its source.
