Rust Fungi and the Importance of Herbarium Specimens

Wednesday, April 16th, 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM EDT

In Person

We welcome you to join us in our first installation of bimonthly meetings at the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences! We are excited to have a regular meeting space to work on some more in-depth community science projects and to welcome academic and professional mycologists to speak to our community about their work.  In this meeting, Club President, Sam Bucciarelli, will speak on the topic of Rust Fungi, their complex life cycles, and  their ecological importance. She will also touch on some of the volunteer work she has been doing in the herbarium collections at the academy, databasing and imaging 200 year old rust fungi specimens, and highlighting the importance of herbarium specimens for fungal conservation.  In addition to the presentation and discussion, there will be a hands-on portion of this program in which we look at some of these herbarium specimens under a microscope as a group and attempt to determine their identity based on micro-morphology of their spore structures.  Registration is limited. Please register in advance and cancel your tickets if you find you can no longer attend this event.  Enter the Academy of Natural Sciences through the 19th Street entrance. If arriving late, please ask to be directed to the BEES classroom.  **This event is free and open to everyone. The PMC is funded entirely through donations. If you are able, please consider giving an amount of your choice at checkout* By registering for this event you grant the Philadelphia Mycology Club to use photographs and/or video of you taken at the event in publications, online, and in other communications related to the Philadelphia Mycology Club.
