As we remember our boy, Gonzo, we're fundraising to help other pets like him.

Pets like Susie, Dean, and Dawn.

Susie has been with us for 9 months so far. She arrived from a backyard full of neglected dogs and gave birth to a litter of puppies. Maybe her fear came from protecting her pups. Perhaps she had not been loved before. She slowly allowed a couple of staff members to be her friends. Today, her confidence is building, and we work daily to help her. She trusts more people, accepts attention, and is getting stronger. We hope Susie will soon be ready for adoption. Until then, she’s safe and loved.

Are black cats unlucky? Dean might think so. He and his siblings came in as 5-week-old kittens in July of last year. Dean had a series of hard knocks, starting with being infected with Calici virus as a kitten. He missed out on the chance to be adopted as a kitten because he was in isolation. Fourteen months later, he’s still waiting. Being an adult, black cat is not easy when there are flashier, more unique cats and adorable kittens to compete with.

Dawn’s story is of abuse and abandonment. She was found tied up, alone, in the adobes. Another shelter took her in, and no one came to claim her. We transferred Dawn to us in February 2024. Dawn, a healthy three-year-old dog, is still learning that people, especially men, can be friends. She is a favorite of our volunteers and staff- who she's learned to trust. We know her home is out there and are committed to finding it. We'll continue to nurture her until then.

Welcome to Second Chance Humane Society, located in Southwest Colorado and home to Ouray, San Miguel, and Montrose County's lost or abandoned pets. Since 1994 we have saved lives through our shelter services while developing effective education programs and events. Visit the shelter to meet our cats and dogs and learn how you can get involved. Shelter is open from 11 am to 5:30 pm, Wed to Sun. We also have regular adoption events.
